India pay the penalty | Top |
UAE, JULY 22 The match finished even before it started. India conceded two penalties within a span of three minutes – the first in the 21 st minute and the next in 24 th minute to lose the momentum early against United Arab Emirates in the World Cup Qualifier, something which they found impossible to recover from. What was worse, the two fouls saw the red-card being flashed twice in the span of three minutes. First Debabrata Roy was red-carded for pushing Mohammed Al Shhehi -- Hamdan Al Kamali converting from the spot in the 21 st minute; and then Subrata Pal was red-carded for an infringement on Ismail Al Hammadi in the 24 th minute-- Mohamed Al Shehhi gleefully scoring from the spot. UAE didn't look back from there as they consolidated onto the early lead to beat India 3-0 at the Sheikh Khlaifa Bin Zayed Stadium. Ismail Al Hammadi completed the rout in the 80 th minute. Down to nine-men, Team India had little options but to defend. Coach Armando Colaco, quite helpless, replaced Steven Dias with goalkeeper Karanjit Singh; Sunil Chhetri fell back in an effort to crowd the midfield with Jeje staying upfront, almost a spectator all throughout. The start, nevertheless, was promising. India earned two consecutive corners in the 5 th minute and rival goalkeeper Ali Khaseif even missed the flight of Steven Dias' second corner. The midfield wasn't allowing much space to the rivals and Gourmangi Singh and Raju Gaikwad looked composed in defence. The Indians need to be credited for not allowing UAE to run away with the match in the first half. With India down to nine-men by the 24 th minute, UAE intended to pump in as many as possible. But it wasn't to be. Armando may have badly wanted an away-goal but it rarely happens when a team is reduced to nine-men as early as 24 th minute. The second-leg slated to be played at the Amedkar Stadium in New Delhi on July 28. India: Subrata Pal; Samir Naik, Gouramangi Singh, Raju Gaikwad, Debabrata Roy; Steven Dias (Karanjit Singh), Mehtab Hossain (Jewel Raja Sheikh), Climax Lawrence, Syed Rahim Nabi; Jeje Lalpekhlua, Sunil Chhetri (Lalrindika Ralte).

India vs UAE – a short preview | Top |
Tonight India take on UAE at the Sheikh Khalifa International Stadium in UAE. The first competitive match after Armando Colaco was appointed as the manager of the national team. Going in on a high after beating Qatar in a friendly, there is a renewed sense of optimism among players and supporters. But as P.K.Banerjee pointed out , the UAE match could be a different ball game all together. Then again, if we are to beat UAE, this is not the first time around. Jules Alberto who slotted in the solitary goal that won us the match in 2001, reminiscences here , how special that goal will be for him. He goes on to say, But football on the field is not about rankings and big names. It's all about who plays better on the day. It was a great team effort which helped us achieve the victory. The midfield pressed well; I.M. (Vijayan) and Bhaichung shouldered extra responsibility — both falling back to help the defence. We played the waiting game to perfection. Coach Sukhwinder Singh had planned everything. True, it is not all about rankings and reputation. Let us hope, Armando has done his home work thoroughly and sets up a team that could stifle the higher ranked UAE team. If you wish to extend your support to the Indian football team, the least you can do is to turn on Tenaction+, tonight 9.30pm and add to the TRP ratings, so that more and more national football matches are shown on tele. Now on to some advertising. If you dint know, the former Argentinian international Ariel Ortega was a transfer target for Dempo sports club and the real reason for India to withdraw from the 1950 football World Cup was not because they were not allowed to play barefoot but no one in India thought it was worthy enough to attend a World Cup, then you ought to subscribe and enjoy, Football News India and follow the same on twitter @ fni
